  21. Here's the question for October 19. Remember to respond by October 21, then again by October 23.

This week we will be studying The Glass Menagerie. Read the first two scenes before you respond. What is your opinion of Tom?

    ReplyDelete
  22. My opinion of Tom is that he is fairly laid back, but thinks that his mom is ridiculous. I think that he is loyal to his sister and wants to see her be happy.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tom reminds me of the stagemanager. He's very laidback and knowledgable. It seems to me that he doesn't really mind his mother's constant nagging. It's just a thing he's gotten used to and it kind of humors him.
Grace: I agree. His mom is very ridiculous. It's kind of like she wants her daughter to be what she could never be.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I haven't heard Tom speak yet, so I'm not entirely sure about his character. I'm learning more from the above comments. And from what I've heard, he seems very lax and somewhat sarcastic/eccentric. Possibly a very entertaining character.
Grace, I love how you can pick up so much in just a few sentences. I can't wait to see that reflected in the play.
And Audrianna, nice comparison. The nagging must have been entertaining to him. I think it's funny.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with you Sally. Tom does seem to be a very entertaining character! :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I personally think that tom seems to not really care about his mom constantly yelling at him the whole time bu he also doest seem very exiting at all lol

Audrianna i agree with you that tom does remind me of the stagemanager from our town :)

you're right grace he does seem to care about his sister alot but not so much his mom haha

    ReplyDelete
  27. this is nicole whitley.
I think that Tom's character is intresting. I like the fact that even though his mom is super annoying and always seems to be bothersome, he doesn't flip out at her, he's just so used to it. And he takes care of his family, but is still quite chill about everything that happens. A very amusing character so far.

    ReplyDelete
  28. kris here !
Tom's character is unique; sort of reminds me of Audrianna's character in Our Town. I enjoy playing the roles characters like Tom's. I enjoy the enthusiam and excitement that comes with describing a scene. I agree with Audrianna's comparison, as well as Sally; I'm waiting to see what's reflected in the play.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Tom...well, he seems to be able to fondly remember his family while at the same time wanting to get as far away from them as he possibly can.
Also,I know I'm skipping ahead here (Spoiler Alert: Snape kills Dumbledore.) but why would Tom feel so guilty about leaving Laura? Her disability dsoesn't seem to hinder her taking 7 hour long walks every single day...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with you, Grace and Audrianna. His mother just failed at life and now she wants to project her type of life onto Laura and make her the woman she sought to be. You pick up on this stuff alot in Psychology. And she's probably going to be my least favorite character too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Where'd my picture go??? My last few posts I've not had a little icon thingy... I'm sad.{sad face}

    ReplyDelete
  32. Tom is pretty easy going. He seems like a good guy because he does care about his family. I agre with audrianna and sally about him being a relaxed but entertaining character.

    ReplyDelete
  33. ok well i think that tom is kinda like the stagemanager in our town! i havent really thought much about toms charcter but he seems like a pretty reliable and knowledgeable and interesting charcter.

ms. smith i need ur help with this posting thing!

    ReplyDelete
  34. About Tom?? hmm... I actually don't know his full character yet. Because at the first and second scene, the majority of the conversation was about his mother and sister. Tom was kind of... out of the scene for a while. But his few lines reflects his atitude towards his mother which he donesn't respect his mother that much.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think we don't know much about Tom yet. I think Tom thinks of his mom as someone stuck in her ways, from back during her day. He just puts up with her. He feels bad for his sister being forced to be something she's not.

So I agree with Grace that his mom is ridiculous.

I also agree with JB that we don't know much about Tom yet.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Mrs.Smith I had such a hard time getting this one to work than the tangler one but thats ok. I've got it now it just took a while.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Alex- Wow you've learned alot more in Psychology than I have!!!! :)

Nicole W.- i think you made a good point when you said that Tom doesn't get angry or fight his mom in response to her nagging...that lets you know that he doesn't take her seriously. i wonder if that is how he responded to her as a child as well.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yeah Grace, I'm certainly a psychic when it comes to textbooks...and only textbooks unfortunately.

Also, I've underestimated Tom I think. He can go off when he's pushed too far by his mother. That scene we read today had the awesomest, most sarcastic rant I've ever seen in a play.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Comment by Kevin:
Tom seemed rude and angry when he responded to his mother. His mom was teaching him how to eat properly, she nagged him really, and he dismissed what she said. His mom is trying to help him, but he doesn't want her help. His response is rude and unnecessary, because he did non need to get upset with her and call her conversation disgusting, and he shouldn't respond to his mother like that.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Here's the question for the week of October 26. Remember to respond by October 28, then again by October 30.

What have you learned through the research you're doing for your New York trip?

    ReplyDelete
  41. well it is hard to find out all the info and where to go for it and how to get it and the different places u can go! such as the theaters, hotels to stay in and all that other stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  42. First thinks this website is stupid and confusing! I learned that Phantom has won way to many awards! So mrs. smith once again charlie here asking for your grace, i didn't blog last week cause i'm a slack please have mercy:)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have learned so far that Momma Mia! has been nominated for some awards but has not won many. Also, lots of people think that the music is fun but that overall the production is not the highest quality (which only regular theatergoers would recognize)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I already knew alot about "The Phantom of the Opera." But I had no idea that the phantom has to spend almost 2-3 hours getting his make up done. It also has won a great many awards that I had not known that it had won. It is a very prestigous opera.

Oh CHarlie, the phantom has not won too many awards. :) It just shows that it really is a work of genious by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Grace: I did not know that Mamma Mia had not won very many awards. I will have to see it some time, so I can see if it really deserves not to win awards. (Not that I'm the best judgement of these things :p)

    ReplyDelete
  45. i have learned that its kinda easy 2 get all the info u need if u spend enough time on it. :)

    Charlie-wow...lol
    Mrs. Smith- HEY MRS.SMITH!!!!!!! lol

    ReplyDelete
  46. Heh, speaking of that, I was gona phone Charlie today so we can get to work on it. Or maybe I'll just finally get a Facebook so we can chat on it and not waste minutes. Not that Charlie's a waste or anything... :/

Audrianna, I know! There's just too manyawards to condense them into the 6 or so lines our paper gives us. Phantom's just too awesome for words!

And Teresa, being the one to book hotels and theater seats must be the hardest job in my opinion. What with all the comparing of the many, many sites and such. So yeah, I feel your pain there.

    ReplyDelete
  47. hey well ive learned from Momma Mia is that most of the music was written or sung by the group Abba and they also had the 14th longest running show in broadway history well at least i think thats what that was. haha

Audrianna-wow i didnt know that it would take so long to put on someones makeup lol

Bristol- i agree you can find a lot more info if you spend more time looking for it...well if you have enough time haha :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I learned thats its hard to sort through all the sites that seem like what you need but really arent. Also, i learned that you can get some pretty cool package deals for a hotel and phantom of the opera tickets

    ReplyDelete
  49. I agree with Nicole that it can be hard to sort through sites, some are completely unhelpful. Charlie, how can anything win too many awards?

    ReplyDelete
  50. My group is doing Mamma Mia! I didn't realize how many different reviews there were for musicals. I always knew there were some but I've come across a bunch. I also really like the souvenirs.

    ReplyDelete
  51. My group is doing "Chicago" the musical~~
When I was in New York, me and my family try to see the musical but we got a tight schedule SO...we could not the see the actual musical. But through this project I learned the story line of the musical and I learn some of the histories of the musical.Which was really interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  52. There were over 6,000 beads in the replica of the Opera House chandelier that falls in the original production of Phantom. It's crazy.

Grace, it's believable that the performance of Mamma Mia! is of a lower quality. I've watched the movie version and it seems like it was intended for entertainment, not necessarily its artistic qualities.

Bravo, Audrianna, bravo! Phantom is truely a work of genious! All hail Webber the Great!!! XD Wow. I need to calm down.

    ReplyDelete
  53. ok well there was so many places that our musical wicked was playing at all different countries and towns! it was hard to pick! haha...bristol i need to talk to u about our part.

    hi ms smith!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Caitlyn sweet our musical was the 14th longest running show!!!

I can't believe there were 6,000 beads in the actual chandelier for the Phantom of the Opera

    ReplyDelete
  55. Kevin says: I have learned that Wicked the musical was good. Critics and reviewers reported that the musical was very different and very good. I haven't read anything that said the musical was bad. All reviews are good. I might want to see this musical. I'm not sure because I have only read about it. I haven't heard about it from anyone I know.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Where is Omar and Chris??
they should be posting this right now~~
    And where is Kyle?!

Anyway, Hey Brittney~~ I see your group is doing Mammamia.Sweet~~ I love that musical. I hope you guys do your best on this Project.

Yo Kevin. How you doing men?
Is your group doing Wiked?? Nice~~~
I really wanted to see that musical but didn't have a chance to see it. SO~~ I'm looking forward to see your groups presentation. ha ha

  57. is there a question for this week?...im confused lol

    ReplyDelete
  58. No post this week. Have a good week!

  59. Kevin says: Have a good week, everyone!

  60. Remember to respond by Wed, 11/18, and again by Fri, 11/20.

What do you feel will be the most challenging thing in writing and performing your own play?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I've always liked acting it's just that sometimes i either get nervous or forget my lines. but now that i can improv it's just the nervous part. that's the most challenging part of preforming the play for me

The most challenging part of writing a play is getting the stage directions down. I like the conversations in plays not the moving around part of it.

    so yeah theres my post.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Mrs. Smith- thx 4 the 2 weeks off. that was awesome. lol

    ReplyDelete
  63. The only problem I would have would be the writing, I think. I'm good at less concrete stuff, like ideas and doing the actual performing. Plus I get cramps often while writing...

    ReplyDelete
  64. my hard part is trying to get over my stage fright but i hopefully will...eventually lol

yea i agree with bristol its hard to get down the right stage directions

and alex you are good with coming up with ideas and performing youre hilarious!!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. whooo!!! go Alex and Caitlyn! yay!

    ReplyDelete
  66. idk y i said that...but anyway...yay!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I would honestly say that the hardest thing would probably be playing so many different characters, but by writing and performing it yourself, you get the characters played and reinacted just as you would want them too. There would also be alot of hard work involved here; but I think that I would actually be able to do it if I ever sat down and tried..

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think the hardest thing will be taking the story you are given and writing a play version. I really want to come up with an original idea with my group, but it will be challenge to follow the guidelines of the story and then try to make it fresh and new without copyong the exact idea. But I'm very excited for the challenge. :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Bristol: It's okay to get nervous. I get nervous quite alot when I perform in front of others.
Horselover: I concur, stagedirections are not going to be fun. I'm really not a big fan of blocking either. I feel very constricted when I'm given blocking. But I understand why we do it.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think the actual acting will be the hardest thing for me. I'm not the most outgoing person, however I think it will help that we are performing for third-graders.

Audrianna, I agree that writing an original piece would be awsome. I guess that's part of the challenge ^_^
Yeah, Kris, playing different characters will be interesting. I'm sure there will be some frantic costume changes going on at some point. XD

    ReplyDelete
  71. I also think it's going to be hard to relate to the children because we have different senses of humor probably. I'm not good at doing slapstick, but better at sharpening my rapier wit with sarcasm or subtle puns.

And Audri, I know you'll do great, you're in creative writing, and you won that award for writing that short story. Me and Bristol will help any way we can!

Caitlyn, thanks for the compliment first off :)
Anyhow,(This is also directed to Bristol)I think blocking's only good for if you know why you have to move here or there, pick up this or that, etc. Otherwise, it's a waste and you look nervous. So if you know why you are doing a stage direction, like by getting to really know the character, it won't be so bad.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hm. I know that the writing will be a difficult chore for me because I detest writing and every story that I've ever tried to write sounds unnatural, fake, and cheesey. It is not my strong suit. I love performing though so that should make it better. I need to learn how to calm down and control my voice when I start.

Yeah Alex incorporating slapstick will be tough for me too b/c I usually don't find it funny at all (reason i don't like THE PINK PANTHER) and I have an ironic sense of humor.

Audrianna and Caitlyn- I personally like stage directions because i like to know what I am going to do ahead of time(or have an idea, at least).

    ReplyDelete
  73. Kevin said: I would be ready for a new challenge. I am ready to see if I can make the play better than the story, which I think would be hard. It might be hard to think of ideas about how the characters talk, both in writing and in acting.

As far as stage directions, I would want to explain exactly what I want the characters and the stage crew to do. I would give them strategies for how to set up the stage and run the show. I think what would be most difficult when performing the characters would be memorizing the words.

Good luck with your plays everyone, your playwriting and your acting! Break a leg!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I think the hardest part will be the group deciding on lines to use. Everyone will probably have different ideas of what the characters should say and what the characters should be like. So the hardest part will be the group deciding together on what works and what doesn't.

See me and Grace are kind of in the same boat. Whats funny is we are in a group together,so that'll be cool.

I also agree with Alex it may be hard to relate to the kids. I think everyone will be able to accomplish it though.

  75. EXTRA CREDIT: Share your favorite Thanksgiving tradition. Please respond by Sunday, November 29.

    ReplyDelete
  76. i dont really have a tradition for thanksgiving besides eating...and that is my favorite part so yeah eating! :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is... I dont have one. We usually spend the first part of the day setting things up/cooking, then friends and family come over, then everyone sort of naps/watches football, then we might go for a walk, then eat dessert, then watch a movie. Nothing really exraordinary.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Kevin said: My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is going to celebrate the holiday at a friend's home and our lake home. My family celebrates the Canadian Thanksgiving and the American Thanksgiving. We talk and eat the same foods for both celebrations: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and pumpkin pie.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Awhhh man I'm a day late for this extra credit oh well i'll write something. My favorite thing about Thanksgiving is getting to see some family that I don't get to see that often. Another thing is definitely the food! :) Also thinking about everything you have and really taking a little bit of time to be thankful for it and realize how lucky we are.

  80. Remember to respond by Wed, 12/2, and again by Fri, 12/4.

What will your elementary play be about next year? About what part are you particularly excited?

    ReplyDelete
  81. As we said today, our play is gonna be a retelling of the classic Horton Hears a Who. Dunno the details about characters yet, but I'm thinking I'd like to be a narrator of some sort so that I can wow the audience with my wordplay, not necessarily my actions. But I could be an active role as well I suppose.

And geez, I'm such a nerd, posting as soon as I get home :P

    ReplyDelete
  82. We're basically doing a satire on a day in the life of a 4th grader for the 3rd grade class. I hope it will end up being funny and that ideas will come to me swiftly. And soon. Oh dear.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Well, if the rest of my group approves, the whole thing will rhyme. I love writing in rhyme so much. I would definitely have a ball with that. Costuming is going to be amazing. I mean, it's Dr. Suess! The colors will be wild! I'm very excited. :)

    ReplyDelete
  84. Alec, you and me must've been on the same brain wave length. I was thinking abouit having a narrator for the story. :)
Sally, you can do it! I bet the ideas will come... :)

    ReplyDelete
  85. Our play will be based off the book You Are Special. We are thinking about doing it from the girl in the story's point of view. I'm really excited about it! I thought that was a really good idea that Grace had.

Alex, I think having a narrator would be a really good idea.

Audrianna, I'm excited to see you guy's costumes too! It's like you said it's doctor suess so there going to be really creative and colorful!

    ReplyDelete
  86. ALEC!!? Err...ok...you can call me whatever ya want so long as you keep up that writing thing you do so well;) I don't much like my real name anyways.
And Brittany, I'm really excited to see what you do with that. I'm kind of a sucker for that kind of stuff. Makes me cry... By the way, how's Grace doing? She doesn't seem like an outspoken gal but knows how to get a job done.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Well as Brittany said we are doing YOU ARE SPECIAL by Max Lucado except we are doing the story of the girl Wemmick Lucia and how she first started seeing the woodcarver Eli, then how she meets Puncinello (Eric might have 2 parts, idk). Anywho I can't really say I'm super excited about anything, but im trying to figure out how to use nice words while insulting someone not in a sarcastic way....oh actually im very excited about doing the stickers!

Alex-i cried when i fisrt saw this when i was little

Audrianna- the idea of rhyming is genious; good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Like alex said our group is doing horton hears a who...i wanna be a secondary character...like morton the mouse. hes not really a necesity but hes hortons best buddy and yeah...hes awesome 2 :)

    ReplyDelete
  89. I think my group's play is about esther, they wont really tell me, lol

    ReplyDelete
  90. oops im late but my group is doing little red riding hood and i cant wait to be the grandma :)

Bristol, Audrianna and Alex im jelous i love horton hears a who i bet that will be great!

Alex-i like the idea of a narrator in fact our group has a narrator!!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Remember to respond by Wed, 12/9, and again by Fri, 12/11.

List at least three things you have learned in this class.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Yays 100th comment!!!
Anyways, 3 things I learned in Theater...
1)Speak up and be more spontaneous. I love when I'm up on stage for improv, and I think my audience loves it too. The hardest part is getting to the stage for me.
2)Do something. I hate it when I feel awkward on stage, not knowing what to do or say. I do so much better when I can make up an action to do while saying lines.
3)Magic-If. My vivid imagination allows me to follow Stanislavsky's method very well, I'd say. I'm so apt at putting myself in other situations that I'm able to use that to my advantage.

    ReplyDelete
  93. 1. Getting up and doing something is only nerve-wracking if I make it that way. But...that doesn't mean I've slaughtered my fear just yet.
    2. Acting cannot be learned. It must be lived. Or else, it really isn't acting.
    3. Joe Mead needs to play the President in a movie, if he is never able to place office.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hmm... let's see
    1) Confidence is key. If you do not possess confidence the moment you step onto the stage, the audience immedietely notices it.
    2) Challenging yourself is the key to becoming better. Though the challenge is frustrating and causes many heartaches and tears, you will be better in the end. Sometimes you surprise yourself.
    3) People can surprise you. The people in this class are gifted in different ways. Most of the time, they impress you with the gifts that you didn't even know they possessed. It always inspires me to see them produce something beautiful.

Play tryouts are on friday. IF (big if!!) I get the role that I want, I won't be in the class anymore, I'll have to transfer to Mr. Z's class. This is a tough decision because I have to pick between two things I hold dearly in my heart, and it really sucks. I just wanted to say thank you to everybody. I always look forward coming to the class everyday.
Theater 1: I see so much talent within you all. It's amazing to see many of you come out of your shells. I can't wait to see what you guys will do in the future.
Theater 2: It's beem great working with you guys for these past two years. I enjoyed putting on "The Near-sighted Knight and the Far-sighted Dragon" with you guys. You all have improved so much, I'm so proud of you guys.
Theater 3 (AKA Joe): We've been here since the beginning when the class was only 9 people. I remember the stressful times of "The Emperor's New Clothes," but it was so much fun. Joe, I have been honored to do improv. with you for these three years. Keep the class laughing. :)
Mrs. Smith: You were the one who made me realize that I need to do acting for life, and not just as a hobby. You have helped me in so many ways and inspired me to do my best. Thank you so much for teaching me for three wonderful years. I cannot express how much you mean to me. Thank you.

I love all of you guys. Keep doing your best for God's glory and pursue what you love.
    Love,
    Audrianna

    ReplyDelete
  95. Sally, Joe doesn't need to play a president, he needs to BE the president.

Alex, you are a joy to watch in improv.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Whaaat?! Audrianna, I heard something different about Mr. Z's classes, and it had something to do with having it only on wednesdays, or something, or maybe it's just something in my subconscious that doesn't want you to leave... and besides, you're the leader of our project and are the Prof. Seuss we need!

And Sally, you certainly must have a great talent for acting because you watch those overly dramatic animes ;) But good luck at Gamestop and I hope you see me in every wide-eyed WoW newbie that comes in the door.

About Joe...imagine him in a British sticom, that's what I always imagine him as when I see him up on the proverbial stage.

    ReplyDelete
  97. 1) I learned how to improve. I knew what it was before just not very well. The class has helped me understand the depth of improve. The class has also conquered my fear of improve. Now, I love it!
    2) I have learned how to be quicker on my feet. In the beginning with any game it was always ummm...what do i say next. Now it's Brittany relax and just don't think about it so much. For me thats what helps me know what to do rather than trying to plan it out.
    3) Confidence is something I think you definitly have to train yourself in. Some people have really high confidence and others don't. Then they are some people that have confidence off stage but not on. For me acting in front of people I had confidence sometimes and somtimes I didn't. So I just had to make myself think I was doing really good when sometimes I knew I wasn't always.

I agree with Audrianna points too.

Oh and Joe should feel special. I could definitly see him playing a role as President or in a British sitcom.

    ReplyDelete

  100. 1) better techniques for simple acting
    2) how NOT to improv, lol
    3) that acting takes actual effort (not that I didn't think this before)
